The Gateway of India not to be confused with the Gateway of India Delhi is a monument in Mumbai, India on the seafront Built in the southern part of the city, the Gate is a monumental arch, built in yellow basalt in the Gujarati style of the sixteenth century. It was built between 1915 and 1924 to commemorate the visit by King George V and Queen Mary to the city in 1911.
After independence of India, the last British troops to leave the country came under the door. The site is a very popular tourist destination. The Taj Mahal, near the door, is one of the world’s most famous hostelry.
Parking near the monument was the site of a terrorist bomb attack August 25, 2003 which caused several casualties.
