Chiang Rai, Thailand

Chiang Rai is a city in northern Thailand located on the Kok. It has a population of 62,000 people.

The city was founded by King Meng Rai in 1262 and became the first capital of the Kingdom of Lannathai but lost this status soon after in favor of Chiang Mai. In 1432, the Emerald Buddha, the largest Buddha image worshiped in Thailand, Chiang Rai was discovered in a temple called Wat Pa Yier, it was then renamed Wat Phra Kaeo.
