Kilkenny Castle, Ireland


Kilkenny Castle, located in Kilkenny, is one of the largest castles in Ireland, built between 1192 and 1207 by William de Clare, 1st Earl of Pembroke to control a fording the River Nore and the junction of several roads. It was a symbol of Norman occupation and in its original building of the thirteenth century, it was an important element of the defenses of the town with four large circular towers at the corners and a massive ditch, part of which is still visible on the Parade .
